Catch & Release

Kläm alltid in hullingen på hullingförsedda krokar.
  • Håll fisken kvar i vattnet!

Information in English

The idea of Catch & Release is that the caught fish should survive. It is therefore important to know how to best handle the fish to give it the absolute best possible chance of survival. Improper and careless handling causes the fish to die upon or after release.

  • Always use a barbless hook! Always clamp the barb on barbed hooks.
  • Adjust the equipment to land the fish as fast as possible.
Exhausted fish accumulate lactic acid in the blood and have a hard time recovering. The combination of exhaustion and air exposure can be fatal.
  • Always use a net! A landing net greatly simplifies unhooking and handling. Rubberized or knotless netting causes the least damage to the mucous layer.
  • Keep the fish in the water!
Air exposure is the single most damaging factor! The top priority must always be to minimize time above water. 1 minute above the surface of the water can be enough to cause permanent or fatal damage, especially when combined with exhaustion. Let the fish lie underwater in the net and recover while you unhook, possibly taking a photo. Use an unhooking tool to speed up and minimize handling.
  • Minimize stress for the fish.
The fish is already stressed from being hooked, so don’t handle it more than necessary. If you must touch it, do so in the water and always wet your hands first so as not to damage the mucous layer. If the fish’s protective mucus layer is damaged, it can easily get infections, be attacked by fungi and parasites. A tip is to hold the fish upside down, this often temporarily paralyzes it.
  • Handle the fish carefully!
If a fish needs to be lifted out of the water, remember that the laws of gravity work differently above the surface. Skeletal injuries and damage to internal organs are caused by careless handling. Never put the fish on dry land! It damages the protective mucus layer. Avoid pressing with your fingers on the soft part of the abdomen. The internal organs are sensitive to crushing injuries, especially the heart. Never lift the fish by the gills and avoid any contact with the gills. They are very sensitive to infection and physical damage. Never lift a fish by the tail spool alone, always gently support with a slightly cupped palm under the pectoral fins where the fish is more rigid. Lifting only in the tail coil can lead to damage to the spine and nervous system.

When the fish is to be released, hold it in the water and gently support it on the bottom, until it swims away under its own power.

If the fish bleeds profusely when unhooked, is deeply hooked, or is damaged in any other way, it must be killed immediately and counted against the catch quota.

When the water temperature exceeds 18 degrees, the fish find it very difficult to recover, even with proper handling. Oxygen dissolves less when the water temperature rises, which means that the oxygen content drops the warmer the water gets. The fish quickly become exhausted and cannot recover in the warm water.
Therefore refrain from practicing C&R at high water temperatures.
